StrategyDota Timing Windows and the Game Duration Market

Every Dota draft is a bet on a clock. A lineup is not simply strong or weak, it is strong between certain minutes, and the whole game is a fight over whether it reaches those minutes with anything left.
Reading which clock each team drafted for is more useful for betting than reading which team has better heroes, because it maps directly onto markets nobody prices carefully.
Three shapes
Roughly, lineups sort into three intentions.
Early aggression wants kills and map control immediately, and wants the game finished before the opponent's items arrive. Mid-game tempo fights around objectives and item timings and looks for one decisive window. Late scaling accepts an uncomfortable first twenty-five minutes in exchange for heroes that dominate once farmed.
None of these is better than the others. They are answers to different questions, and the interesting part is what happens when two of them meet.
The useful question
Does the game state a team wants match the game state it is likely to get?
When an early-tempo lineup faces weak lanes and no reliable way to survive, the plan and the map agree, and the favourite's price is probably fair or short. When a scaling draft has enough defensive tools to reach its window, the same thing is true from the other direction.
The genuinely hard case is conflicting timings, where both teams drafted for a window they can plausibly reach. That is where results get noisy, and the honest response is a smaller stake or no stake at all.
Where this becomes a market
Game duration, over and under, where the book offers it. It is the most direct expression of a timing read available, and it is priced off averages far more than it is priced off drafts.
Total kills works the same way. Aggressive draft against aggressive draft is not a small nudge on a kill total, it is a different distribution, and the line frequently sits near a season average that neither of these teams is going to produce.
Handicaps and first-blood style props pick up the same read at the early end of the game.
The comfort-pick signal
Watch for a team spending an early pick to secure a specific player's signature hero. That costs flexibility, and teams do not pay that price casually. It usually means a rehearsed strategy is being built around it.
The reverse signal is stronger. A team banned off its comfort heroes and improvising in a deciding game is executing something it has practised less, under the most pressure it will face all series. Late-series drafts are generally more predictable than opening ones for exactly this reason. Under pressure, everyone falls back on what they trust.
The expiry date on all of this
Dota patches change hero strength, item viability, the map itself and the gold curve, and a timing window can move by minutes overnight. Before trusting any read, know whether the current patch is a fighting patch or a farming one, because that single fact reprices every conclusion above.
Which is also the honest limit. Draft reading tells you what a game is likely to look like. It does not tell you whether five people execute it, and Dota's comebacks are structural. A lineup that missed its window can still win from a large deficit in a way most esports do not permit. That is the risk you carry every time the read is correct and the bet loses anyway.

FAQ
Which market best expresses a draft timing read?+
Game duration, where the book offers it, because it is the most direct statement of when a lineup is strongest and it tends to be priced off averages rather than off the draft. Total kills works the same way: two aggressive drafts do not simply nudge a kill line, they produce a different distribution from the one the season average describes.
How do I start learning to read Dota 2 drafts?+
Watch professional matches with the analyst desk segments, where casters explain why teams pick and ban certain heroes. Track positions one through five, note comfort picks, and pay attention to timing windows. Always tie your reads to the current balance patch, since hero strength and the meta shift regularly.
