StrategyThe Five Positions, and What They Tell You Before the Creeps Spawn

You do not need to know every hero in Dota to read a draft. You need to know five jobs and be able to sort ten picks into them.
The jobs
Position one is the carry. Farms the safe lane, converts gold into the team's main source of damage, and is deliberately useless early.
Position two is the mid. Plays a solo lane, hits levels ahead of everyone else, and usually sets the tempo of the first ten minutes.
Position three is the offlaner. Plays the harder lane against the enemy carry and its support, and generally becomes the frontline or the initiator.
Position four is the roaming support. The least defined role in the game. Gank, stack, pressure, create space.
Position five is the hard support. Spends its own farm on wards and on keeping the carry alive, and finishes the game with the worst items and often the most influence over the result.
Sort a lineup into those five and two questions answer themselves. Who starts the fight, and who survives it. A draft with no reliable initiation is fragile no matter how frightening the heroes look individually. A draft where every core is squishy wins by ambush and loses by being caught.
The lane that decides the early game
Safe lane against off lane, and it is not a symmetric matchup. The safe lane carry has protection available and the offlaner is meant to be uncomfortable. The real question is how uncomfortable.
An aggressive dual lane that denies a carry its first ten minutes of farm has not just won a lane. It has pushed that carry's power spike back by minutes, and in Dota minutes are the currency everything else is priced in. Early-game markets track this considerably better than they track overall team strength.
Mid is the other lane worth watching, because the mid laner is the player most likely to turn a small lead into map pressure before anybody else has items.
Flex picks and the last pick
Two things in a draft carry real information.
A flex pick is a hero that can credibly go in more than one position, and it forces the opponent to commit lanes without knowing what they are committing against. Teams drafting flexible heroes early are buying uncertainty, and uncertainty is expensive to play against.
The last pick is the counter slot. A team holding it back is signalling that it intends to answer something specific, and whatever appears there is usually the clearest statement of intent in the entire draft.
Where this stops working
Reading roles tells you what a lineup wants. It does not tell you whether these five people execute it today, whether the carry is on a hero he has played eleven times or four hundred, or whether the team landed yesterday after a long flight.
It also decays with the patch. A change to the map, the neutral items or the gold curve can make the same lane matchup mean something different within a week. The framework survives that. The conclusions do not.
Use it to understand why a game unfolds the way it does. That is worth more than a prediction and it is more reliably true.

FAQ
Do I need to know every hero to read a Dota 2 draft?+
No. It is more useful to map each pick to its role and ask basic questions: does the team have a way to start fights, a frontline, and a clear timing window? That structural view tells you more than memorising individual hero abilities, and it stays relevant even as patches change which heroes are strong.
Which lane matters most for early-game betting markets?+
Safe lane against off lane. An aggressive dual lane that denies the enemy carry its first ten minutes of farm pushes that carry's power spike back by minutes, and early markets such as first blood track that far better than they track overall team strength. Mid is the other one worth watching, since the mid laner usually converts a small lead into map pressure before anyone else has items.
