GuidesEsports Betting Bonuses: How to Price the Wagering Requirement

A bonus is a loan you repay in turnover. Once you look at it that way, most welcome offers stop being exciting and start being a maths problem, which is roughly the correct amount of excitement to feel about them.
What you are actually being given
Deposit 100 and take a 100 percent match, and you hold 100 of your own money plus 100 in bonus credit. The credit is not withdrawable. It becomes withdrawable only after you have wagered some multiple of it, and often a multiple of the deposit as well. Six times, ten times, sometimes far more.
That multiple is the wagering requirement, and it is the whole offer. Everything else is decoration.
The arithmetic nobody puts on the landing page
Every qualifying bet you place pays the bookmaker's margin. On a two-way esports market that hold is commonly a few percent of stake, and it runs higher on niche markets and live prices.
So run the numbers. Push 3,000 in turnover through a book holding around 5 percent and you expect to give back roughly 150 in margin to unlock 100 of credit. That offer is negative before you have picked a single winner. Push the same 3,000 through a genuinely low-margin book, or clear a requirement of only a few times the bonus, and the sums look different.
This is not an argument against bonuses. It is an argument for doing the multiplication.
The clauses that decide everything
- Minimum odds. Almost every offer requires qualifying bets at or above some price, which exists specifically to stop you clearing the rollover on heavy favourites.
- Maximum stake while wagering. Some books cap the bet size that counts, stretching the offer over weeks.
- Market exclusions. Read this one twice if you bet esports. Wagering rules are usually written for football and casino, and esports markets are sometimes weighted lower or excluded entirely on offers that are advertised to esports bettors.
- Expiry. A short window on a large requirement is what turns a bonus into a reason to bet more than you meant to.
- Forfeiture on withdrawal. Withdraw before clearing and the credit generally disappears, sometimes along with winnings derived from it.
Which offers are actually worth taking
Low-rollover offers, cashback on net losses, and free bets with clear settlement terms, in that order. Cashback is honest: you know what you get back and when. A free bet is worth less than its face value, because you keep the winnings and not the stake, but at least that value is easy to compute.
The ones to decline are the enormous headline matches with double-digit rollovers. They are marketing spend converted into an obligation, and the obligation is yours.
The part that matters more than the value
A wagering requirement is a machine designed to keep you betting after the point you would otherwise have stopped. Even when the maths works, ask whether you would place those bets without the offer hanging over you. If the answer is no, decline it — most books let you opt out at deposit — and bet with your own money on your own schedule.
Never chase a rollover you are behind on. Never deposit again to rescue one. The credit is not worth it, and it was never really yours.

FAQ
Do esports bets count toward wagering requirements?+
Not always, and this is the most common trap for esports bettors specifically. Some operators weight esports markets lower than sports, some exclude particular market types such as live or handicap bets, and a few exclude esports altogether while still advertising an esports welcome offer. Look for a contributions or exclusions table in the bonus terms before you deposit, not after.
How do I work out whether a bonus is worth taking?+
Multiply the required turnover by the typical margin on the markets you intend to bet. That product is roughly what clearing the wagering costs you in expectation. Compare it with the bonus amount: if the cost exceeds the credit, the offer is negative value no matter how large the headline percentage looks. Minimum-odds clauses matter too, because they prevent you clearing it cheaply on short prices.

The byline on our odds and ratings work. Headline numbers are traced back to an operator's own terms or a published rulebook, and anything that will not trace does not get printed.
