PredictionsWorlds Is Three Different Tournaments, and They Do Not Bet the Same

Worlds is sold as one event and discussed as one event. It is not one event. The stages behave so differently that a read which works in the opening week is close to useless by the bracket, and the most common way to lose money at Worlds is to carry a habit from one stage into the next.
Stage one: the variance stage
Whatever it is called in a given year, the early portion of Worlds is where lower seeds and lower-rated regions get their games, and it usually contains the shortest series in the tournament.
A best-of-one between two competent League teams is far closer to a coin flip than the standings suggest, because one draft can decide it and the better team never gets a chance to correct. That is not an argument for backing underdogs indiscriminately. It is an argument for distrusting short prices, because a heavy favourite in a Bo1 is a bad price much more often than a heavy favourite in a Bo5.
Stage two: where the data finally exists
By the second stage you have something that did not exist in September. Results between regions, played on the tournament patch, with the actual champion pool that will decide the event.
Use it, and update quickly. Preseason regional priors go stale within about a week of Worlds beginning, and the market abandons them more slowly than the games justify. A team that looked like a filler qualifier and has now won four straight is not a fluke by the fourth one.
Stage three: skill wins, and the prices know
Best-of-five knockouts are where the format finally allows the better team to be better. Four opportunities to adapt a draft is a great deal of adaptation, and series comebacks are common enough that being 0-2 down is not the sentence it appears to be.
The favourites are priced accordingly, which pushes the interesting markets away from the series winner and toward the shape of the series. Correct score and total maps carry the read that this favourite wins but does not win cleanly, and that read is usually more defensible than the one the moneyline is asking you for.
The patch is a genuine edge, once
Worlds is played on a specific version, locked well in advance. Which teams that version suits is knowable before the event, and it is not the same set of teams that were strong on the summer patch.
The edge is narrow and it closes fast. After three or four games on the tournament patch everybody can see who adapted, and the price contains it. Patch analysis is worth most in the first week and close to nothing by the quarterfinals.
Things that move Worlds prices harder than the Rift does
Stand-ins and visa problems, announced late and often. Third-week fatigue, which is real and impossible to measure. And your own attention span. Worlds runs for a month, and by the semifinals a lot of people are betting because it is on rather than because they have a read.
The bettors who finish the tournament ahead have generally placed far fewer bets than they expected to.

FAQ
When does the League of Legends World Championship take place?+
Worlds is an annual event held in the autumn, typically running across several weeks from around late September into early November. Exact dates, host cities, and the format vary each year, so check Riot Games' official announcements for the current schedule before you plan any bets.
Do the different stages of Worlds need different approaches?+
Yes, and it is the main thing people get wrong. The opening stage often features best-of-one games, where variance is high and short favourite prices are frequently poor value. Best-of-five knockouts run the other way, because the format protects the stronger side, so the interesting markets shift toward correct score and total maps rather than the series winner.
