Esports Betting in Bangladesh Is Now a Criminal Offence, Not a Grey Area

Guides to betting in Bangladesh — including an earlier version of this one — described the country as a legal grey area. That description is out of date, and leaving it up would be dishonest.
The Gambling Prevention Act 2026
Parliament passed the Gambling Prevention Bill on 30 June 2026 and the law was enacted on 2 July. It repeals the Public Gambling Act 1867, the colonial-era statute whose maximum penalty was a month inside and whose fines were measured in hundreds of taka. The replacement is not in that register.
Online or remote gambling carries up to five years' imprisonment, a fine of up to Tk 1 crore, or both. Online betting and bookmaking sit a tier higher at up to seven years and Tk 5 crore. Organised gambling with money laundering reaches ten years. Match-fixing and spot-fixing have tiers of their own, and advertising, sponsorship and affiliate promotion of gambling are separately criminalised.
Two procedural details matter more than the headline numbers. The offences are cognisable and non-bailable. And enforcement powers extend to freezing and confiscating bank accounts, digital wallets, crypto holdings and servers.
The Money Rails Were Already Closing
None of this arrived without warning. Bangladesh Bank had already directed mobile financial service providers — thirteen of them, including bKash, Nagad and Rocket — to stop processing gambling-linked transactions, compile lists of suspected accounts and staff monitoring teams. The High Court had separately ordered BTRC to block betting advertising across digital platforms.
The gap between rule and reality is real. A Daily Star investigation found betting sites, Facebook promotion and agent networks still openly reachable, and the providers' own defence has been that person-to-person wallet transfers are near-impossible to classify. But "still reachable" and "still legal" are different sentences, and only the first one still applies. Money sitting inside a rail that is being built for freezing is not money you control.
What Is Left
Following the scene is not gambling. Bangladesh's competitive energy is genuinely mobile — Free Fire and PUBG Mobile carry real local audiences and produce squads that reach South Asian qualifiers — and battle-royale placement scoring is interesting precisely because it resists prediction. Watch it. Write down who you think will win before the lobby drops. Check yourself over a month.
That costs nothing and breaks no law, which is more than can be said for the alternative right now.

자주 묻는 질문
Is online betting legal in Bangladesh?+
No. The Gambling Prevention Act 2026, passed on 30 June 2026 and enacted on 2 July, replaced the Public Gambling Act 1867. Online or remote gambling carries up to five years' imprisonment or a Tk 1 crore fine; online betting and bookmaking carry up to seven years or Tk 5 crore. The offences are cognisable and non-bailable.
Can bKash or Nagad still be used for betting deposits?+
Bangladesh Bank has directed mobile financial service providers, including bKash, Nagad and Rocket, to stop processing gambling-linked transactions, compile lists of suspected accounts and run monitoring teams. The Act also allows wallets, accounts and crypto holdings to be frozen and confiscated.
Does the new law only target operators?+
No. Operating and bookmaking carry the heaviest tiers, but taking part in online or remote gambling is itself an offence of up to five years or Tk 1 crore, and advertising, sponsorship and affiliate promotion are criminalised separately.
